GOOD CORPORATE GOVERNANCE AND TAX AVOIDANCE: EMPIRICAL EVIDENCE FROM PROPERTY AND REAL ESTATE COMPANIES IN INDONESIA

ABSTRACTTax avoidance is a strategy undertaken by companies to legally minimize their tax obligations, often by utilizing gaps or unclear provisions in existing tax laws. This study aims to investigate how executive traits, the audit committee, and institutional ownership relate to corporate tax avoidance practices. The research is focused on companies in the property and real estate sector that are listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) during the period 2019 to 2023. A total of 32 firms were selected using purposive sampling, each observed over a span of three years. Data used in the analysis were secondary in nature, obtained from annual reports available on the IDX’s official platform. To test the proposed hypotheses, the study employed multiple linear regression analysis, processed through SPSS version 26. The results show that executive attributes and audit committee characteristics do not have a significant effect on tax avoidance behavior. However, institutional ownership was found to be negatively associated with tax avoidance, suggesting that firms with higher institutional ownership tend to engage less in aggressive tax planning.
