The Practices, Challenges, and Prospects of Crime Investigation in Oromia Regional State Police, Ethiopia

Crime investigation is essential for building public confidence and fostering respect for law and order. This study is aimed at identifying the practices, challenges, and prospects of crime investigation in the Oromia Police, Oromia, Ethiopia. The study was a form of descriptive research employing a concurrent mixed approach. About 400 respondents and 33 participants were involved in the survey questionnaire, interview, and FGDs, respectively. The findings indicate that crime investigation practices in Oromia face challenges, including deficiencies in the legal framework, understaffing, ineffective selection processes, inadequate training programs, insufficient resources, poor documentation, lack of proactive strategies, flawed evidence gathering, and ineffective covert techniques. The study also found prospects (actions to be taken)for improving crime investigations that include stronger political commitment, international support, and the integration of technological innovations. The study concludes that improving crime investigation practices in Oromia police requires specialized policies, a comprehensive staffing strategy, practical training, better resource allocation, improved documentation, proactive crime prevention approaches, and better evidence gathering, as well as the regulated use of covert techniques. The findings suggest the need for urgent political will, institutional reform, and community involvement to overcome the challenges the crime investigations(departments) are facing. Keywords: Practices, Challenges, Prospects, Crime, Crime Investigation, Oromia Regional State, Police.
