SYNTHESIS AND CHARACTERIZATION OF SUBSTITUTED N-(BENZOTHIAZOL-2-YL)-1,3-DIPHENYLPROP-2-EN-1-IMINE DERIVATIVES
The present study explores the synthesis of heterocyclic derivatives based on the N-benzothiazolyl nucleus through both conventional and modern methods. It focuses on the condensation reactions of substituted 2-aminobenzothiazoles with various carbonyl compounds. In the conventional approach, these reactions were conducted for prolonged periods in ethanol. Alternatively, the catalyst-assisted method utilized cupric bromide in dimethyl sulfoxide, significantly reducing the reaction time to only a few minutes. This modern technique yielded the desired substituted benzothiazoles in nearly quantitative yields, with purity levels exceeding those achieved through conventional methods. Although the benzothiazole framework exhibits a broad spectrum of biological activities, including antioxidant, anticancer, antiinflammatory, analgesic, anti-tubercular, and antibacterial effects. The characterization of the synthesized compounds was performed through spectroscopic analysis, employing Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The findings indicate that the catalyst-assisted synthesis not only accelerates the reaction but also enhances product yield and purity, demonstrating its effectiveness as a practical approach for producing valuable benzothiazole derivatives in organic synthesis.
