Students’ experience with library use asynchronous e-lectures at Delta State University, Abraka, Nigeria

This study examined students’ experience with library use asynchronous e-lectures (e-learning) at Delta State University, Abraka, Nigeria. Descriptive survey design was adopted. The population of the study consisted of second year students of the Delta State University, Abraka in 2022/2023 academic session. These students were taught library use instruction (GST 101: Use of Library) asynchronously via pre-recorded video lectures in the first semester of the previous academic session. A self-constructed instrument via Google form/survey was used to collect data from the students. The data were analysed with frequency counts and percentage. Results revealed that a majority of the students viewed/accessed very few of the pre-recorded lectures; that the lectures enabled a majority of them to learn at their pace and learn at any time and location as well as enhance comprehension of the library use course material; they however experienced some challenges such being unable to afford data to view all the lectures, absence of opportunity to ask lecturers questions, not able to keep track of lectures and lack of personal android/smartphones as well as WhatsApp accounts to access the lectures. It was concluded that though the students derived benefits from the lectures, they experienced some challenges. It was recommended that the university authority should give orientation to the students on asynchronous mode of lectures and stress the importance of viewing all the lectures; that the university management should make sure that the recorded lectures are also made available on the university websites where students can view them at any times and that the lectures should be made available on the systems of the university library so that students can access them freely.
