Analysis-Runtime Co-Design for EDF-VD-Based Mixed-Criticality Scheduling: Improving Completion Rates of Low-Criticality Jobs
In this paper, we explore mixed criticality systems, where traditional approaches often adopt a pessimistic stance in managing low-criticality tasks, focusing primaryly on ensuring the timely completion of high-criticality tasks. We optimized the “Analysis-Runtime Co-design” for the preemptive single-processor EDF-VD algorithm, and introduces the EDF-VD-DL protocol. The main adjustment refines the conditions for transitioning between high and low criticality levels. When a task shows high-criticality behavior, dynamic relaxation is used to delay the switch to high-criticality mode, reducing the frequency of such transitions. Additionally, the transition from high-criticality mode to low-criticality mode is expedited, reducing the duration spent in high-criticality mode. This effectively minimizes the risk of missing deadlines or leaving low-criticality jobs incomplete, thereby improving the completion rate of low-criticality jobs. Finally, we validated the schedulability of the new protocol through testing and experimental evaluation.
