Artificial Intelligence in Self-Regulated Learning: A Decade of Global Research Trends and Themes (2013-2023)

The rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) has significantly influenced its application in the field of self-regulated learning (SRL). Despite the growing use of AI in SRL, there remains a clear lack of comprehensive reviews on the current state of research in this area. This review employs the CiteSpace analysis tool to conduct a thorough bibliometric analysis of 964 relevant studies on AI for SRL published between 2013 and 2023. The study maps keyword co-occurrence and identifies emerging terms, visually illustrating the research trajectories and trends in this field over the past decade. The keyword co-occurrence analysis reveals four main research pathways in AI for SRL, accompanied by six auxiliary research branches, including learning analytics, performance, educational data mining, and motivation. These trends highlight the potential and evolving direction of AI technologies in supporting SRL. Additionally, the burst keyword analysis further identifies periods of heightened research activity on specific topics, reflecting the dynamic progression and expanding research themes in AI for SRL. The findings also offer predictions on future development trends and the challenges that may arise.
