Leveraging Quasi-Dynamic Grid Analysis of Industrial Loads: A 132 kV Norwegian Case Study

Power systems serving large industrial consumers must handle sharply time-varying loads that challenge conventional planning methods. This study evaluates system performance under such conditions using industrial load profiles with Gaussian variability. A case study of the Norwegian 132kV industrial grid is conducted in DIgSILENT PowerFactory. Results reveal key operational bottlenecks, including transformer and line overloads, and voltage levels nearing regulatory limits (e.g., minimum bus voltage of 0.953p.u.). Remaining hosting capacity varies significantly—from 216.5MW to 2153.0MW across buses—indicating uneven infrastructure stress and localized constraints. These findings underscore the importance of time-series simulations and detailed load modeling to accurately capture system dynamics. The results also highlight the critical role of Smart Grid strategies and Demand Response programs in enhancing operational flexibility and overall system reliability. Incorporating such adaptive, data-driven solutions is essential for resilient operation amid increasingly variable industrial demand and can inform more effective planning, operational strategies, and infrastructure investments in modern power systems.
