Victor Hugo del salón a la prensa. La circulación de la traducción de Claude Gueux de Alberdi entre Buenos Aires y Montevideo a fines de 1830
Towards the end of 1830, Juan Bautista Alberdi translated Claude Gueux, a story by Victor Hugo against the death penalty, to accompany the reading of his ‘Fragmento Preliminar al Estudio del Derecho’ at the meetings of the Literary Salon of 1837. Two years later, already exiled in Montevideo after the break with Rosas, he published the story in the newspaper El Corsario, which he edited. The aim of this article is to analyse the uses and effects oftranslation in its two contexts of circulation, especially in relation to a central problem for Buenos Aires romanticism at the time: that of the political representation of the literati in the context of Rosas.
