Train Hard, Score High: The Impact of Practice Tests on SQL Learning
Practice testing is a well-established method for enhancing learning and long-term knowledge retention, particularly in fields requiring problem-solving skills. However, there is still not enough attention given to the automation of that process and the specifics of SQL query-writing skills. Moreover, further research is needed to clarify the effectiveness of this method in database education, how committed students are to taking practice tests, and whether the effects differ between advanced and struggling students. This study examines the influence of ungraded (formative) practice tests on students' SQL learning outcomes using CodeRunner/Jobe autograder system. We conducted an observational study, analyzing students' engagement with practice tests and subsequent performance on graded (summative) assessments. The results demonstrate a positive causal effect between low-high practice test engagement and graded test scores, with students actively participating in practice tests achieving significantly higher grades.
