Enhancing Grade 9 Students’ Mathematics Performance through Small Group Classroom Rotation

Small group classroom rotation schedule is learning strategy where students rotate through different activities at set of times. It is designed to provide varied learning experiences to the students and manage classroom dynamics effectively. This study investigated how students' performance in mathematics could be influenced by a small group classroom rotation schedule as opposed to a traditional lecture style. Conducted at Mindanao State University-University Training Center, the study utilized 60 students from the Grade 9 level, including the 30 students from Grade 9 section Hydrogen in an experimental group using the small group classroom rotation schedule and 30 students from Grade 9 section Helium in a control group using traditional methods. In this study, the results of Pre-test showed that there is no significant difference between the two groups the control and experimental groups, where their mean scores are 17.13 and 17.17, respectively. While the post-test results revealed a slight increase in both groups' scores. However, the experimental group showed a more consistent performance. Particularly, there was no significant change in the control group's performance from pre-test to post-test (p = 0.079), while the experimental group demonstrated a statistically significant improvement (p = 0.000). Moreover, a statistically significant difference was observed between the control and experimental groups after the intervention (p = 0.003), indicating the positive impact of the small group classroom rotation. Based on the results of the study, implementing small group classroom rotation schedule can improve students' conceptual grasp of mathematics and provide an alternative to conventional teaching methods. This study suggests more research is needed in various subjects and grade levels, as well as providing teachers with the necessary training to use this approach to instruction effectively.
