High Single-Mode Power 852-nm Two-Junction Cascade VCSELs with Stable Polarization for Quantum Sensing

We designed and fabricated an 852-nm two-junction cascade vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL). A high single-mode output power of 6.1 mW is obtained under continuous-wave operation by introducing a stepped oxide structure and an extended cavity. Stable single polarization is achieved by introducing elliptical oxide apertures resulting in a maximum orthogonal polarization suppression ratio (OPSR) of 25.7 dB. The high single-mode output power is fully optimized through epitaxial structure design, which remains compatible with conventional VCSEL fabrication processes without additional steps. This device shows potential for integration in Cs-based quantum sensors.
