Intelli-Egg: Automated Data-Driven System for Increasing Hatch Success of Poultry Eggs
Egg incubation is crucial in poultry farming, yet traditional methods often yield inconsistent hatch rates due to environmental fluctuations and the need for manual monitoring. This study introduces the Intelli-Egg system, an IoT-enabled smart incubator designed to address these limitations through automated environmental control, real-time remote monitoring, and image-processing-based fertility detection. The system integrates an Arduino Uno microcontroller, DHT11/DHT22 sensors, a Raspberry Pi with a camera module, and a web application for remote access. Fertility detection was achieved using the COCOn model, which demonstrated a 98.1% mean average precision (mAP). In prototype testing, the Intelli-Egg system achieved an overall fertility prediction accuracy of 85.71% and hatching rates of 77% and 86% in two separate batches. The results highlight the potential of the Intelli-Egg system to enhance hatch success and streamline poultry farming operations.
