A Novel Technique To Control Serious Rectal Bleeding Post Transrectal Prostate Biopsy, A Case Report.
Prostate cancer is the commonest cancer among men in Africa. Transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) guided biopsy of the prostate is a well-established technique for diagnosing prostate cancer. Rectal bleeding following TRUS biopsy is very common yet mostly self-limiting complications. However serious rectal bleeding, although rare can cause life threatening hemorrhagic shock. In an ideal setting, such life-threatening shock would be managed with sigmoidoscopy and or interventional radiology. In low resource setting such catastrophic bleeding can result in death. We present a case of a 64-year-old man who presented with life-threatening rectal bleeding post TRUS biopsy. He needed transfusion of several blood units for hemodynamic stability. Finally, he was successfully managed with a novel technique of using TRUS guided peri-prostastic injection of 20mls of 1% lignocaine with 1:200,000 adrenaline.
