The Indian University System: Structure, Challenges, and Potential for Innovation

The Indian university system is one of the largest and most diverse higher education systems in the world, encompassing a wide range of central, state, private, and deemed universities. This research paper analyzes the historical background, structural development, administrative structure, major educational policies, and quality determinants of the Indian university system. It also elaborates on the major challenges currently facing universities, such as financial crises, declining research, curriculum irrelevance, teacher shortages, and barriers to technological inclusion. The research paper also shows how the higher education system in India can be restructured through innovation, digitization, skills development, and international collaboration. The New Education Policy 2020 is proving to be a significant initiative in this direction, the implementation of which will define the future of universities. This study concludes that if academic autonomy, research culture, transparency, and appropriate integration of technology are incorporated into educational institutions, the Indian university system can become globally competitive and effective.
