The impact of digital payment systems on consumer purchasing behavior
This research paper analyzes the rapidly increasing use of digital payment systems and their impact on consumer purchasing behavior. In India, digital transactions, particularly technologies such as the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), mobile wallets, internet banking, and QR code scanning, have revolutionized financial transactions. The COVID-19 pandemic led to an unexpected surge in digital payments, profoundly impacting consumer purchasing preferences, decision-making processes, and frequency. The research found that digital payments have provided consumers with faster, more convenient, and secure transactions, leading to an increased propensity for both online and offline shopping. Consumers are now more readily inclined to spend and often make impulse purchases. Furthermore, cashbacks, discounts, and loyalty programs offered through digital payment methods have also influenced purchasing behavior. However, challenges remain, including a lack of digital literacy, cybersecurity concerns, and limited internet access in rural areas. This research also highlights the socio-economic impacts of digital payments based on changes in consumer attitudes, behavior, and market response.
