The Micro-Spiral Method: An Innovative, Transformative Approach to Science Education
Abstract: The Micro-Spiral Methodology (hereinafter referred to as MSM) is a recognized and touted approach used to successfully teach the sciences, particularly to those who are currently underrepresented in the field, specifically, Latin Americans, African Americans and economically disadvantaged students. MSM employs the recursive repetition of concepts, knowledge, and skills, which with each successive iteration builds on previous encounters, resulting in a deeper understanding of the science curriculum. A longitudinal study demonstrated that over the past decade, state science test scores continually increased for those students who have been taught using MSM. Additionally, the students scored especially high in the geosciences (Florida Department of Education (DOE), Statewide Science Assessment 2009-2020).
