Effective non-surgical treatment of brain-originating metastatic solitary fibrous tumor: A case study

Malignant transformation complicates diagnosing and treating solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) hard due to its complexity and risk of severe spreading. In this study, we report a 51-year-old woman with a history of brain tumor treatment who experienced recurrence after 9 years, treated by surgery and radiotherapy. Four years later, she had recurrent diarrhea and liver and lung metastases, which were confirmed by histologically, immunohistochemically (positive for STAT6, CD34, and Ki-67), and by CT (liver nodules 111 × 102 mm and lung nodules 55 × 33 mm). The patient suffered from transcatheter arterial embolization, hepatic artery infusion chemotherapy (oxaliplatin + cyclophosphamide), intravenous antiangiogenic therapy (bevacizumab), and intravenous immunotherapy (sindilizumab). A re-examination on January 3, 2023, showed liver lesions and a solid nodule (112 × 82 mm) in the right lobe, reduced from previously. Multiple nodules and masses in both lungs were also noted, with a larger nodule in the left lung (55 × 34 mm). Follow-up exams in May and August 2023 showed improvement. This rare case highlights the potential of integrated therapy for inoperable, brain-originated metastatic SFT.

Abstract

Malignant transformation complicates diagnosing and treating solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) hard due to its complexity and risk of severe spreading. In this study, we report a 51-year-old woman with a history of brain tumor treatment who experienced recurrence after 9 years, treated by surgery and radiotherapy.
