MODIFICATION OF WASTE POLYETHYLENE-POLYPROPYLENE BLEND WITH ACRYLAMIDE-FUNCTIONALIZED EPOXY-DIANE CO-OLIGOMER
In this research study, a novel modification method for the recycling of polyethylene-polypropylene (PE-PP) based waste has been investigated. Polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) are among the most widely used thermoplastics. Since waste derived from these polymers often originates from the same industrial sources, they are typically encountered as mixed materials. Due to their differing physicochemical properties and limited chemical compatibility, it is necessary to separate these waste materials before recycling [1-2]. To address this issue, an epoxy-diane oligomer was functionalized with acrylamide and introduced into the system as a compatibilizer to improve the compatibility between PE and PP. This chemical modification, facilitated by functional amide groups, enhances interfacial interactions between polymer phases and improves phase adhesion. The functionalized co-oligomer was incorporated into PE/PP blends through reactive extrusion, significantly enhancing the physical and mechanical properties of the blend. The application of functionalized co-oligomers as a compatibilizer improved the homogeneity of the polymer blend by increasing compatibility between polymer phases. Based on the results of the study, the optimal concentration of the functionalized co-oligomer for achieving a targeted composite was determined to be 10%. This approach offers a sustainable and efficient solution for addressing challenges associated with polyolefin recycling. By enhancing the chemical compatibility between PE and PP, it contributes to waste reduction and the production of environmentally friendly recycled materials.
