Assessment of genetic variability in carrot (Daucus carota L.)

Carrot (Daucus carota L.) is an important root crop exhibiting considerable genetic variability. In this study, 20 diverse carrot genotypes were evaluated for yield and related traits using correlation and path coefficient analyses. Significant phenotypic and genotypic correlations were observed between total root yield and traits such as plant height, root length, root diameter, and root weight, while days to harvest showed a negative association with yield. Path analysis revealed that plant stature traits (e.g., plant height and number of leaves) exerted the highest positive direct effects on yield, whereas some root traits influenced yield mainly through indirect effects. Selection based on plant vigor and root size is likely to be effective for yield improvement. The results highlight key traits for carrot breeding programs to enhance root yield and quality.
