Ferhat Abbas’s Political Activity Between 1945 and 1947
This article examines the political activity of Farhat Abbas during the period between 1945 and 1947.It draws on unpublished archival documents to highlight a major shift in his political discourse following the massacres of May 8, 1945.During this time, Abbas moved from advocating integrationist ideas to promoting selfgovernment within a federal framework. The article also explores the founding of the Democratic Union of the Algerian Manifesto, its political actions, and its interactions with other nationalist movements. The findings suggest that Farhat Abbas sought to build a moderate political project that balanced national ambition with political realism.
