Capita Ascetica / Capita Centum на Теодор Едески в превод от Х век (Предварителни наблюдения)
The study presents initial data on the Slavic translation, distribution and filiation of the copies of Theodore of Edessus’ work Capita ascetica / Capita centum, known as the „Деятелни глави“. It has not yet found a place in the history of ascetic literature, since information about the personality of its author is limited. The work covers 100 paraenetic texts (instructions for monastic life), which include both wisdom sayings and biblical quotations. The researchers found that 82 of them were borrowed from the works of Evagrius Ponticus and the rest were apophthegms and borrowings from the instructive chapters of Maximus the Confessor, sometimes retold. The language of the original translation points to the circle of monastic “chapters” translated from a Byzantine source in the 10th century in Eastern Bulgarian literary circles. The Russian, Bulgarian and Serbian copies number more than 30 and date from the 13th to the 17th centuries. The text is a valuable source for the content, structure and function of the early educational literature.
