An analysis of collection development and book acquisition policies in Ayurveda college libraries of Maharashtra

This study investigates the collection development and book acquisition policies of Ayurveda college libraries of Maharashtra. Data were gathered through structured interviews with library staff from 78 colleges, with 64 (82.05%) responding. The findings reveal that most libraries maintain moderate-sized collections, predominantly between 10,000 and 20,000 books. Nearly all libraries have book acquisition policies, with over 76% having these policies documented in writing. The implementation of acquisition policies varies, with the majority reporting regular or need-based application, though a quarter indicated irregular practices. Most respondents viewed the policy application positively and perceived the procurement process as transparent. Despite these strengths, gaps exist in policy documentation and consistent implementation. The study underscores the importance of formal, well-implemented acquisition policies to support academic programs, research, and lifelong learning in Ayurveda colleges. Recommendations include standardizing policies, enhancing transparency, and ongoing evaluation to address emerging educational and technological needs.
