Association Between Anxiety Levels and Demographic Characteristics of ICU Patients’ Family Members: A Cross-Sectional Study
Family members of patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) are vulnerable to psychological distress, particularly anxiety. Understanding how demographic factors influence anxiety levels can inform targeted support interventions. Research aim to examine the relationship between demographic characteristics and anxiety levels among family members of ICU patients prior to any therapeutic intervention. This was a cross-sectional analysis of baseline data from 65 family members of ICU patients at a public hospital in Central Java, Indonesia. Demographic variables included age, gender, and relationship to the patient. Anxiety was measured using the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HARS). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, and chi-square tests. Most participants were female (56.9%) and in the 31–45-year age group (44.6%). The majority were the patient’s child (38.5%). Severe to very severe anxiety was observed in 63% of participants. Statistical analysis showed a significant association between anxiety levels and age group (p < 0.05), but not with gender or relationship to the patient. Age appears to be a significant factor influencing anxiety levels among ICU patients’ family members. These findings highlight the importance of tailoring psychological support based on demographic profiles to improve family-centered care in critical care settings.
