Evaluation of charging frequency for electric vehicles considering drivers’ charging behaviours and high output chargers

• Electric vehicle evolution is met with well-planned high output charger deployment. • Developed and validated a charging frequency evaluation model. • Driver’s charging behaviour influence the charging frequency. • Improved operational efficiency by aligning charger selection with vehicle conditions and driver’s needs. The widespread adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) depends significantly on the development of adequate charging infrastructure. With the recent global introduction of high-output chargers, such as those rated 350 kW, evaluating their impact on EV charging demand has become increasingly important. This study introduces an evaluation model that analyses EV charging frequency by incorporating the charging behaviours of drivers and the charging performance of EVs. The evaluation model provides insights into how faster charger output and behavioural patterns influence EV charging frequency. The findings reveal that high-output chargers are frequently underutilised under the current charging behaviour of drivers, leading to operational inefficiencies. To address this issue, a new strategy is proposed that optimises the operational efficiency of high-output chargers by aligning charger allocation with vehicle conditions and driver needs. This approach has the potential to reduce infrastructure investment costs while enhancing the overall quality of charging services.
