A call to integrate specialized dermatology clinics into care of patients with inflammatory bowel disease
Patients with inflammatory bowel disease are at risk for significant dermatological complications, including co-existing cutaneous manifestations such as psoriasis, hidradenitis suppurativa and pyoderma gangrenosum, as well as treatment-associated malignancies. However, fewer than 10% of this patient population are currently receiving dermatological care, and there is a clear need to improve dermatological access and prioritize patient education on photoprotection, self-surveillance and regular skin exams. These challenges underscore the necessity for dedicated dermatology clinics integrated within multidisciplinary teams to improve outcomes for this complex patient population.
