Galectin-3 with Antibodies Causes Death of Jurkat Cells

Galectin-3 (Gal-3) is a protein from the galectin family that is involved in the development of several diseases such as cancer, fibrosis and heart failure. This makes it promising in terms of diagnosis and therapy of these diseases. Gal-3 acts on the cell by binding to receptors inside the cell or on its surface which causes various effects. We obtained recombinant monoclonal antibodies to Gal-3 by phage display. Jurkat cell line was used as an example to examine the effect of the fabricated antibodies on the known process of death of these cells under the influence of Gal-3. It was shown that in the presence of antibodies, the death of Jurkat cells from exposure to Gal-3 increased. We suggest that this effect can be explained by the facilitation of the process of multimerization of Gal-3 molecules under the influence of specific antibodies.
