Development of a hybrid network structure based on poly (bis (2-(methacryloyloxy) ethyl) phosphate)-polysaccharide gum via covalent and supra-molecular interactions for biomedical applications

Recently, significant efforts have been made to explore the potential of bioactive natural polymers to develop functional materials for biomedical applications. The current research is mainly focused to designing the hybrid network hydrogels for use in health care uses, especially in drug delivery (DD) and hydrogel wound dressing (HYWD). The copolymeric hydrogels were synthesized by using poly (bis(2-(methacryloyloxy) ethyl) phosphate) (PBMEP)- poly(acrylamide) (PAAm) – tragacanth-gum through covalent and supramolecular interactions. Material was analyzed by 13 C NMR, FESEM, EDAX, FTIR, XRD & TGA-DSC techniques. The release of ciprofloxacin drug was observed in controlled manner and followed a Fickian diffusion mechanism. Korsmeyer-Peppas kinetic model has best described drug release. HYWD were able to absorb about fourteen grams of simulated fluid, which can maintain wound surrounding conducive for healing process. Dressings also illustrated antioxidant activity by 28.27 ± 0.28 % radical trapping during DPPH test. Hydrogel dressings exhibited permeability to oxygen and H 2 O. Overall, these findings suggested that these materials could be applied for DD and HYWD.
