Next-Gen Railway Crossings with IoT Solutions for Enhanced Safety and Control

Railway crossings, especially unmanned level crossings, pose a significant safety risk, often leading to accidents due to human negligence. This research presents an IoT-based automated railway crossing system designed to enhance safety by utilizing NodeMCU, vibration sensors, and Firebase for real-time gate control. Unlike traditional manually operated or semi-automated systems, our approach leverages wireless data transmission to detect an approaching or departing train and automate gate operations. The system consists of three interconnected nodes: two vibration sensor nodes placed at strategic distances along the track and a gate node equipped with a servo motor, buzzer, and LED indicators. When a train is detected, sensor data is transmitted via Firebase to the gate node, triggering automatic gate closure and alert signals. Upon the train's departure, the second sensor updates the system, reopening the gate. Our low-cost, scalable, and real-time solution aims to significantly reduce railway crossing accidents while providing an efficient, IoT-driven alternative to conventional gate control mechanisms.
