Harnessing the power of storytelling in public Relations: Mobilizing public action against climate change

The escalating climate crisis necessitates innovative approaches to bridge the gap between public awareness and actionable change. Traditional communication methods, while informative, often fail to inspire tangible public engagement. This study investigates how storytelling in public relations (PR) campaigns can act as a transformative tool to foster emotional connections, build empathy, and motivate public action against climate change. By analyzing three successful PR campaigns—"My Climate Story," SolarAid's "Lighter Nights," and The Climate Reality Project's "24 Hours of Reality"—this review identifies key narrative strategies, including relatable storytelling, cultural tailoring, and the integration of visual and emotional appeals. The findings highlight that storytelling is most effective when paired with actionable solutions, such as promoting renewable energy adoption or grassroots advocacy. The study also addresses challenges, including sustaining audience engagement and measuring the behavioral impact of narratives. Drawing on narrative communication and emotional appeal theories, this review provides actionable insights and best practices for PR professionals and policymakers. Ultimately, it underscores the potential of storytelling to mobilize collective action and drive meaningful responses to the climate crisis.
