An <i>S</i>4-Symmetrical Multi-Macrocyclic Nanohoop Derived from a 1,3-Alternate Calix[4]arene Core

Combining conjugated paraphenylene macrocycles with other functional macrocyclic units presents a promising approach for expanding the structural and functional diversity of multi-macrocyclic molecules. Herein, we report a macrocyclic nanohoop with <i>S</i>4 symmetry, composed of a 1,3-alternate calix[4]arene core and two oligo(paraphenylene) segments. Structurally, this macrocycle features interconnected cavities, and functionally, it inherits the fluorescence of the paraphenylene frameworks and the ion-binding capability of calixarenes. Remarkably, this macrocycle exhibits selective fluorescence responses toward potassium and uranyl ions. Theoretical calculations further reveal the nature of the noncovalent interactions for metal ion recognition.
