Level of contamination of market garden produce by pesticide residues: case of the Lobo watershed (Daloa, Ivory Coast)
Contamination of vegetables by pesticide residues is a crucial issue for food safety and human health. The objective of this study is to assess the level of contamination of vegetables by pesticide residues used in market garden crops located along the effluents of the Lobo River in Daloa, Ivory Coast. This study focused on samples of tomatoes, cabbage, green beans, peppers and onions collected for this purpose. These samples were analyzed using a SHIMAZU liquid chromatograph. The results of the analyses showed that all the collected samples contained pesticide residues with varying concentrations.Indeed, 9 pesticide residues were found in tomatoes, cabbages, and peppers compared to 7 in onions and green beans.Furthermore, the analyses also showed that pesticide residues malathion, chlorpyrifos, dicofol, methamidophos in tomato samples, Lambda-Cyhalothrin, Malathion, Chlorpyrifos, Dicofol in cabbages, malathion, dimethoate in green beans, chlorpyrifos, dicofol, deltamethrin, methamidophos, dimethoate in peppers and profenofos, deltamethrin in onions have concentrations respectively higher than the values of the Codex Alimentarius standards.
