Attached Buildings within the Urban Blocks in the Center of Sofia
The paper analyzes the empty glitches between the otherwise attached buildings within the urban blocks in the center of Sofia – setups in which a party wall of a high building is at a distance of 60-285 cm from the facade of a free-standing building. The spaces between these walls are explored through the theory of partial objects developed by the philosopher Slavoj Zizek. A partial object is a part of a whole, which exists and functions independently of the whole. Such are the undead creatures known in cinema, e.g. terminators, aliens, zombies, etc. In this context, the "glitches" are considered partial spaces – like partial objects they exist independently, but unlike partial objects, they have no function. The current paper studies what determines the autonomous functions of partial objects and what functions would be suitable for utilizing the partial spaces of the "glitches", therefore, transforming them into partial objects.
