From benchmark to bedside: can multimodal artificial intelligence withstand real-world dermatology?

This letter critiques a recent study proposing an artificial intelligence-based multimodal diagnostic model for early mycosis fungoides. We highlight methodological concerns, including the lack of external validation, unclear data separation and unblinded evaluation, which may overstate the model’s clinical utility. Rigorous, prospective validation is needed before translation into practice.

Abstract

This letter critiques a recent study proposing an artificial intelligence-based multimodal diagnostic model for early mycosis fungoides. We highlight methodological concerns, including the lack of external validation, unclear data separation and unblinded evaluation, which may overstate the model’s clinical utility. Rigorous, prospective validation is needed before translation into practice.
