Adoption of Internet of Things for smart city-enabled smart hospitals

The term “Internet of Things (IoT)” refers to the vast network of connected sensors and devices. In smart city-enabled hospitals, this technology has a significant impact on the lives of people. Today, cities require the necessary infrastructure to support the IoT and other advanced/specialised tools for storing & analysing the large volumes of data generated. The main objective of this paper is to identify and discuss the significant applications of IoT for smart city-enabled smart hospitals. This study contributes to the understanding of the importance of IoT for the complete implementation of smart cities and hospitals. Relevant papers published up to 2024 on IoT for smart cities and hospitals were identified from Scopus, Google Scholar, ResearchGate, ScienceDirect, and other research platforms. These papers were further studied to achieve the defined objectives. By using IoT, a city can progress toward becoming a smart city through a network of interconnected devices, including sensors, medical devices, automobiles, industrial devices, home appliances, and other related devices. In the healthcare field, millions of lives can be saved during medical emergencies, such as heart failure, diabetes, and asthma attacks, using real-time monitoring undertaken through linked devices. IoT devices are well-equipped to gather medical and other health-related data through real-time condition monitoring, enabled by smart medical devices connected to smartphone applications. IoT devices gather and transmit health data, including measurements of blood pressure, oxygen saturation, blood glucose, weight, and electrocardiograms, and collectively function as a smart hospital. IoT devices can convert and transfer data over the Internet without a human intermediary. Worldwide, smart cities and hospitals can be well realised by implementing various types of IoT services.
