INTEGRAÇÃO DOS TÍPICOS NO tRANSTORNO DO ESPECTRO AUTISTA: COMO É SER VOCÊ? – RELATO DE EXPERIÊNCIA
ABSTRACT Introduction: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) includes specific sensory characteristics that may hinder the adaptation of autistic individuals to the school environment. A lack of understanding of these particularities can foster prejudice and compromise inclusive practices. Objective: To raise awareness among elementary school students about the sensory differences experienced by individuals with ASD, promoting empathy and school inclusion. Methods: The extension activity was carried out at a public school in Teresina, Brazil, with 7th-grade students. Three sensory simulations were conducted (auditory, visual, and tactile), allowing participants to experience situations that mimicked sensory overloads often faced by individuals with ASD. After the activities, students shared their impressions and took part in a guided discussion about how such stimuli affect behavior and well-being. Results and Discussion: Participants demonstrated greater understanding of ASD-related sensory manifestations. There were spontaneous reports recognizing past prejudiced behaviors, and students actively engaged in discussions about diversity and inclusive practices. The activity contributed to the deconstruction of stereotypes and encouraged more supportive interactions. Conclusion: The sensory-based experience proved effective in enhancing empathy and understanding of autism, fostering attitude changes and reinforcing the development of a more inclusive school culture.
