Evaluation method for control effect of radiation signatures of heat source device

Radiative heat transfer from high-temperature surfaces of heat source devices can significantly impact thermal comfort for personnel. Currently, there are no established methods for evaluating the effectiveness of radiation signature control. In this study, we propose the use of image similarity metrics to assess the control effects of radiation signatures from such devices. We investigated a device equipped with a built-in 363W power heat source, using an external 30.8W heating film to simulate its radiation signatures. The structural similarity index (SSIM) was employed to analyze the thermographic images of both the heat source and its background, which are both affected by their respective radiation signatures. The SSIM value for both the heat source device and the background was found to be 0.51. However, when the background area was not heated, the SSIM dropped to just 0.11. These findings suggest that the background must be considered in the design and evaluation of radiation signature control for heat source device.
