Framework for Development of Simple Tool for Balanced Bituminous Mixture

Given the increasing popularity of performance-based mix design for asphalt mixture, it is crucial to explore the possibilities of linking aggregate proportioning with the concepts of a balanced asphalt mixture. This study presents a state-of-the-art framework to select the most suitable blend of given aggregate stockpiles and to assess the minimum bitumen content for producing a balanced asphalt mix. Using minimal information related to the gradation of available stockpiles, target gradation band, specific gravity of aggregates, and aggregate water absorption, it is possible to find the best optimal gradation and minimum binder content. The decision is exercised based on selected gradation parameters, minimum asphalt film thickness, filler to binder ratio, and maximum density line. The framework is made available as a ready to use open-source tool called Simple Tool for Balanced bituminous Mixture (STBBM), which can be adopted for mix proportioning of asphalt mixture.
