Electroacoustic response of ultrasonic transducer with arbitrary period signal input based on extended piston model

Abstract The piston and equivalent circuit models describe the relationship between the ultrasonic transducers’ electric input and acoustic output, which is essential in ultrasonic transducers applications. However, they are limited in expressing the electroacoustic response of ultrasonic transducers. The classical piston model can only be suited to sinusoidal input signals, while the equivalent circuit model provides a less precise description of the non-resonant response. To address these issues, this study proposes an extended piston model of the ultrasonic transducer based on signal decomposition and reconstruction. The model is verified with various input signals by simulations and experiments. The results show that the proposed model can calculate the response of an ultrasonic transducer accurately. Additionally, the input signal of the piston model can be extended to accommodate any arbitrary periodic signals. It will help optimize the drive control of the ultrasonic transducer.
