AÇÕES SOCIOEDUCATIVAS DE ENSINO DE SUPORTE BÁSICO À VIDA PARA ARTESÃOS DO POLO CERÂMICO DE TERESINA

ABSTRACT Introduction: The Ceramics Center of Teresina, located in the riverside region of Poty Velho, is an important hub of cultural preservation, income generation, and social inclusion. However, its peripheral location and the artisans’ socioeconomic profile hinder access to emergency services, emphasizing the relevance of basic life support (BLS) training. This outreach project, developed by medical students, aimed to empower workers with first aid skills and promote a culture of prevention. Objective: To train artisans from the Teresina Ceramics Center in basic life support techniques, focusing on choking maneuvers, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and the use of the automated external defibrillator (AED), through an accessible and interactive methodology. Methodology: This is a descriptive study, structured as an experience report, linked to the Research and Extension Methodology course. Prior technical visits were conducted to understand the environment and adapt the pedagogical strategy. On the action day, the training was divided into three stages: (1) an expository lecture on emergency response, first aid, and the survival chain; (2) practical activities in small groups using simulation mannequins for CPR and choking procedures in adults and children; and (3) distribution of informative pamphlets and an open conversation circle. A coffee break concluded the event, reinforcing community ties. Results and Discussion: The project engaged 13 artisans and 11 organizers. Participants showed increased self-confidence and awareness in handling emergencies, particularly airway obstructions and CPR application. The hands-on, culturally sensitive approach facilitated knowledge retention and enhanced the integration between technical knowledge and local culture. The experience also sparked interest in continued health education among participants. Conclusion: The outreach project successfully achieved its goals of health education and skill development. For the students, the experience fostered essential skills such as communication, empathy, and teamwork, contributing to a more humanized medical education. The initiative can be replicated in other underserved communities with limited access to emergency services. Keywords: Health Education; First Aid; Basic Life Support.
