A Single Stage Alternative for Voltage and Frequency Regulation in Isolated Pmsg System
PMSGs have been utilized for wind power extraction since decades and are efficiently working till present time. The PMSG are well known to have good voltage regulation due to fixed flux operation. This makes them efficient and effective for wind application. Though PMSGs are efficient in power generation they are quite expensive to setup due to their complex and expensive power electronics converter arrangements. Mostly a back to back converter setup is used for power generation in PMSG. Use of BTB converter also increases the cost of the system. This work proposes a low cost single stage power conversion system which consists of a battery operated D-STATCOM. The D-STATCOM is governed by an orthogonal current component based control strategy which successfully manages the active power of the system to maintain a constant voltage and frequency profile. The performance of the proposed system is evaluated with variable wind speed and load profiles. This system is dynamically modelled using MATLAB/Simulink and is validated in real time using OPAL RT 4510 platform.
