Techno-Economic Evaluation of Hybrid Renewable Energy Solutions and Green Hydrogen Production for CPEC's Developing Economic Zones

This study explores the techno-economic viability of incorporating indigenous renewable energy systems into four major Special Economic Zones (SEZs) along the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), specifically focusing on Dhabeji, Allama Iqbal Industrial City, Rashakai, and Bostan. Using RetScreen software for energy mix optimization, the analysis identifies that hybrid systems, especially a 30%-70% solar-wind combination in Dhabeji, deliver the most cost-efficient Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE) at 0.0421 USD/kWh. Bostan's entirely solar-based configuration proves to be the most economical, with an LCOE of 0.0415 USD/kWh. Furthermore, the study examines the potential for green hydrogen production from excess energy, with Dhabeji's system achieving a competitive Levelized Cost of Hydrogen (LCOH) of $3.77 per kg. The findings highlight the economic and environmental advantages of implementing hybrid renewable energy systems in Pakistan's SEZs, providing valuable insights for shaping energy policies and fostering sustainable industrial growth.
