Numerical Determinations of Hazardous Angles for Pistol Shootings in Firing Ranges
In view of the current geopolitical situation, the armed forces need more than ever to train in the use of firearms, to prevent the risk of war.The training of armed forces requires adequate means: shooting ranges. The shooting ranges must be compliant, in order to be able to be used without risk.It is likely that a stray bullet will have a trajectory impacting outside the firing range -a hazardous case. The problem is therefore to have a secure shooting range, in order to use it without taking any risks. The main objective of this study is to determine and evaluate how to validate a shooting range.Ballistics is the science which aims to study the movement of projectiles.During a ballistic study, different parameters must be considered: the calibre of the weapon, the dimensions of the projectile, air friction, atmospheric pressure, firing distance. The study of ballistics will therefore allow us to understand how a projectile behaves during its trajectory. Two small calibre pistols were considered, the Glock 17 and the TT-33 Tula Tokarev. The MATLAB software was selected to perform several numerical simulations, on different shooting range configurations, for different shooting positions.Variations of the firing angles were studied to determine hazardous behaviours and the optimal firing range configuration.
