Reading Angolan Fiction Disanthropocentrically: Bourgeois Pigs, Magical Goats, and Vagabond Dogs

Abstract: By offering a disanthropocentric reading of Manuel Rui’s Quem me dera ser onda (1982) and ultimately highlighting its commonalities and differences with Pepetela’s O cão e os Caluandas (1985) and Boaventura Card-oso’s Maio, Mês de Maria (1997), this article explores the contradictory dynamics of revolution and order shaping socialist Luanda from the late 1970s to the late 1980s, and takes inspiration from Fahim Amir (2022) in examining how animal resistance to human violence should be taken seriously as a political act. It also identifies how Angolan literature has ambivalently channelled violence against animals, successively denouncing and normalizing the suffering and death of animals to reflect on state violence. The elusive presence of resistant pets in the MPLA’s stronghold, Luanda, also exposes the party and the elite’s uncomfortable and conflictual relation to the more-than-human environment and to African rurality more broadly.
