‘A Casa da Porca’: The Porcine Undoing of Domesticity and Anthropocentrism in Hilda Hilst’s Sensual World

Abstract: From an eco-feminist perspective sympathetic to more-than-human life, this article proposes to explore, in a number of interrelated ways, the specificities and ambiguities of the Brazilian writer Hilda Hilst’s (1926–2004) depictions of pigs in the novella A Obscena Senhora D [The Obscene Madame D] (1982), and briefly in a poem sequence from Amavisse [To Have Loved] (1989). I am interested in exploring, firstly, how the inclusion of porcine beings in narratives about men and women’s lives in twentieth-century Brazil might contribute to depicting the disruption of Western conventions of both masculine-hued epistemology and feminine domestic behaviour, and, secondly, how Hilst’s prose, by itself adopting notionally porcine qualities (which eschew human rationalism and instigate what I call a rootling relationship with the world), may be said to disturb anthropocentrism. At times potentially constituting an instance of porcine co-authorship, particularly via a human– animal collaboration referred to by Patrícia Vieira (2018) as zoophytographia , while at other times potentially colluding in the instrumentalization of porcine beings for human ends (particularly as symbolic entities, albeit always — happily — as slippery and unknowable ones), Hilstian texts experiment with and perform a swerving away from anthropocentrism. This ‘ dis -anthropocentrism’ involves modes of thought which knowingly and expressively deviate from anthropocentrism, without necessarily ever quite attaining a utopic state of ‘ non -anthropocentrism’: it is a fruitful failure, a valiant attempt to leap beyond the human that produces empathy, curiosity, and queerness.
