Advanced channel coding techniques: LDPC and polar codes
Modern society's reliance on fast and dependable data transmission, especially in mobile wireless communications from 1G to 5G, faces challenges due to noise and imperfections in the channel.Choosing a suitable channel coding scheme is crucial for fast, low-error communication.Low-density parity-check (LDPC) and Polar codes are the 5G channel coding algorithms discussed in this study.Polar and LDPC codes are gaining popularity due to their faster encoding and decoding processes and better bit-error-rate performance. In the context of 5G, the primary goals are to address challenges left by 4G systems, such as energy efficiency and spectrum scarcity.Communication networks have grown, thus requiring error-correction codes for error-free and accurate communication, and these codes, with their own sets of advantages and disadvantages, form the basis of the 5G communication networks. This paper mainly compares polar codes and LDPC codes since they are very important, widely employed in modern wireless communication systems, and are known for their usefulness in many other applications. The focus of our study is first to define the two coding techniques concisely and then present the comparison to improve the practical usage. The comparison is conducted using different decoders for each type of code.
