Process Management Compass And Competence Ladder To Empower Process Management Skills

To effectively develop the skills required for the seamless execution of optimized processes across an organization, a comprehensive understanding of the subject is essential. This includes real-time and data-driven processes, employees who recognize the value of well-structured workflows, standardized company-wide process management practices, and a strong process management culture. However, the authors have observed that process management training - particularly in university courses - often focuses solely on modeling and automating isolated processes. As a result, graduates may enter the labor market with insufficient practical knowledge. To bridge this gap between academic instruction and real-world application, the authors developed a modeling and simulation environment designed to enhance students' process management skills. This environment incorporates real-world case studies, extensive screencasts, and collaborative exercises. Despite these resources, students have not yet gained the tool for independent learning. This paper introduces a systematic approach to improve the learning experience. Two frameworks are introduced: the Process Management Compass defines the key dimensions of process management and the Process Management Competence Ladder categorizes skill levels from beginner to expert. These frameworks then serve to build a novel e-learning environment designed to fully develop process management competencies.
