Comparative Analysis Of Modern Video Coding Standards

Multimedia consumption has significantly increased in recent years, with platforms such as YouTube and Netflix dominating bandwidth usage. Choosing the appropriate video encoding standard is crucial for efficient storage and transmission. This encompasses the raw video stream from the camera, footage that has been scanned directly from the film stock, and frame sequences from simula- tions. This paper presents a comparative analysis of con- temporary video encoding standards, including H.264, VP9, H.265, AV1, and H.266. Various objective metrics, including PSNR, SSIM, and VMAF, are used to assess compression efficiency, encoding speed, and image quality. The study highlights the trade-offs between computational complexity and compression effectiveness. The analysis does not take into account legal issues related to the use of certain encoding standards for commercial purposes, such as patent royalties.
