TwinTorsion — Open Source Platform For Evaluating Torsional Vibration Employing Digital Twin Web

Torsional vibration significantly impacts mechanical system performance and lifetime. Therefore, the torsional vibration of the system should already be considered in the design phase. However, the current commercial tools available for analyzing torsional vibration rely on proprietary formats to describe systems, hindering the sharing of system models between different tools and stakeholders. Furthermore, searching for component specifications from multiple sources, such as product catalogs and manufacturer websites, to build system models necessitates considerable manual work. To overcome these issues impeding torsional vibration analysis in the design phase, this paper introduces an open source web-based TwinTorsion tool to define torsional vibration models and a standard format to present these models. The TwinTorsion tool employs Digital Twin Web to automatically discover component digital twins, reducing manual work. These digital twins contain torsional vibration models in the proposed general format, designed to enable sharing of the models and conducting torsional vibration analyses using the tool of choice. The applicability of the TwinTorsion tool was demonstrated in a windmill powertrain design use case, showing the potential of the approach for facilitating torsional vibration analysis in the mechanical system design process.
