Star Formation in Galactic Spiral Arms and Interarm Space

An unresolved question remains whether spiral arms in galaxies enhance the efficiency of large-scale star formation. The paper discusses preliminary results of a study of the specific star formation rate in spiral arms and interarm space. A large sample of galaxies from the SDSS MaNGA catalog is studied with data from GalaxyZoo:3D used. The results obtained do not contradict the interpretation supported by other authors that gas in spiral arms is transformed into stars with the same efficiency as in the disk.

Abstract

An unresolved question remains whether spiral arms in galaxies enhance the efficiency of large-scale star formation. The paper discusses preliminary results of a study of the specific star formation rate in spiral arms and interarm space. A large sample of galaxies from the SDSS MaNGA catalog is studied with data from GalaxyZoo:3D used. The results obtained do not contradict the interpretation supported by other authors that gas in spiral arms is transformed into stars with the same efficiency as in the disk.
