The Evolutionary Cycle of Interstellar Dust
This review is dedicated to the description of the stages that dust undergoes during its life cycle, from its formation in the asymptotic giant branch of stars to its destruction in the interstellar medium and its participation in the production of new stars and planets. It covers all important processes involved in the dust life cycle: nucleation and growth, interaction with ultraviolet radiation and energetic particles, fragmentation and coagulation through collisions with each other, the participation of dust in chemical reactions in the interstellar medium. The main observational signatures of dust from ultraviolet to infrared wavelengths are demonstrated in the review, and modern dust models and their uncertainties are also discussed.
